Guitar

Area of Study: CLASSICAL GUITAR
Session 1: June 21 - July 3, 2010
Grades: 4 - 12
Special Requirement: 1. Must be able to read music and play two easy pieces for the audition (contact YMA for further information) 2. Students must bring a classical guitar (acoustic, not electric) with nylon strings

Students who have basic music reading skills and are able to play at least two simple pieces on the guitar may enroll in Classical Guitar during Session 1. Auditions on the first day place the guitar students according to ability level and assist the instructor in determining the music and curriculum he will use during the session. In the audition, the students will have the opportunity to play two pieces, sight read and discuss chords, and talk to the instructor about what they would like to work on. Students may be self-taught if they are able to read music and have fundamental knowledge of chords and general guitar skills.

The music faculty at YMA exposes students to a wide variety of the world's great classical music, which is rarely offered in middle schools or high schools. Faculty and counselors perform along with the students. This integration of ages and skill levels creates an opportunity for mentoring to take place and facilitates a camaraderie among all musicians. Through expert advice and daily personal attention, the students explore the possibilities of their instruments and deepen their understanding of music.

Instrumental music students also have the opportunity to work in small chamber groups each afternoon. These small ensembles will work on chamber music suited to their ability level with one of our music counselors or faculty.

Each student is provided with individual practice time. With the many activities going on during the thirteen-day session, the practice periods are welcome opportunities for students to reflect and focus on their own development.

Students have many opportunities to perform. In addition to the informal performance on Sunday afternoon marking mid-session, and the final performance on the last night of the session, there are a number of talent shows in which students are encouraged to participate.
