Must be able to match pitches; ability to read music preferred but not required
YMA Choir students learn a range of vocal genres in a fun, lively atmosphere that blends concert choir and voice class. You’ll develop the fundamentals of healthy, robust, authentic singing in a safe and nurturing group setting where you’ll receive individualized attention. The Choir faculty will introduce you to a sampling of some of the best choral literature—everything from classical and folk music to jazz standards and the songs of today. They’ll help you boost your vocal production while elevating your appreciation of musical culture and tradition. You’ll work on developing your own vocal technique, improve your musicianship, and learn more about harmony and rhythmic awareness as you build ensemble skills. Rehearsals include vocal warmups, rhythmic exercises, sight-reading, and movement, and will address breathing techniques and diction as you learn pieces in various languages.
One of the best things about becoming part of the YMA Choir program is that it gives you the chance to spend two weeks with other students who love to sing. The fellowship centered around vocal music fosters a sense of community that’s enhanced by our dynamic faculty and challenging music.
Choir students perform during the informal Visiting Sunday show and at the Final Performance. You may also opt to participate in regular student performances throughout the session. Auditions on the first day will inform the assigning of parts within the choir.
